SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE! MASS SHOOTINGS SHOULD NOT BECOME THE NORM...

Congressman Tim Murphy of the 18th District of Pennsylvania seems to have put together some legislation for dealing with mass shootings.  He calls it the Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act. It is definitely not the only piece of legislation that needs to be made but I believe this may be a step in the right direction.  Mass shootings are happening too frequently in our country and the Commonwealth has had its share.  The gun debate (gun control vs. gun rights) is an issue drawing intense passion from both of the issue.  While both sides have valid arguments, sometimes I feel that each side is more concerned with being right or at least proving the other wrong.  While I don't think the Congressman's bill is the only solution, it seems to represent a sensible step in the right direction.  I hope it gets some consideration or discussion.  Check out this article by Matt Bai as well.  There is some unnecessary sarcasm in the article but it does give a sense of what the bill is trying to accomplish.  With the way Congress works as well as the news cycle, this bill will most likely die and not make the floor.  So, this is my way of helping to draw attention to it.

HOW DOES THIS WORK?

I'm not sure how this works.  If you have been convicted of a crime, shouldn't you go to jail.  I am not for or against our former governor.  Maybe someone can explain to me why this "sentencing" has taken so long especially since he was found guilty.  Doesn't being guilty mean doing jail time?  I do not feel the average citizen would get this long if found guilty of a crime and convicted.  This seems to be preferential treatment because he was an elected official.

Democrats have momentum in state Senate fundraising - Richmond Times-Dispatch: Virginia Politics

Democrats have momentum in state Senate fundraising - Richmond Times-Dispatch: Virginia Politics

Fundraising is important.  Obviously, political candidates need funds to operate a campaign.  However, it should never overshadow a politicians' requirement to be truly connected with their constituents.  It is easy to fall into the trap of the fundraising race and all media outlets have a tendency to focus on these numbers.  To know the amounts that candidates have raised is an interesting bit of trivia.  However, it really doesn't provide a substantive story.  Who the money comes from is more important.   Whether liberal or conservative, tracing the donations/ donors to political campaigns gives the light necessary for transparency.  My hope is that articles such as this one will have follow ups.  It is not inconceivable that the make up of a campaign's donors/ donations may reflect that campaign candidate's future decisions as an elected official.  In addition, past elections have shown that winning the money race doesn't translate winning an political office.  For me, how much money someone raises in a campaign isn't as important as who they may be indebted to once in office.

Morrissey's bid for Dance's seat hits a snag - Richmond.com: Virginia Politics

Mr. Morrissey seems to have controversy where ever he goes. There is always something. May be he should just lay low for awhile and regroup if he is serious about doing positive things in Virginia. None of the controversy that always seems to surround his name is very constructive. It always seems to be similar to a real life soap opera. I don't know how this will ultimately play out. I just hope it doesn't cause harm to Virginia and more importantly to the citizens represented by this Senate seat.
